Can I lubricate the extruder gears with oil?

No—do not apply lubricating oil. If lubrication is needed, only use grease, and apply it carefully only to the gear meshing area and the shaft/axle area to avoid contaminating the filament. In general, we don’t recommend doing this because it’s hard to apply correctly.

If I want to print carbon-fiber filaments, is swapping to a hardened nozzle enough? Do I really need to upgrade the extruder gears?

A hardened nozzle is necessary, but it’s not the whole story. Carbon-fiber and other abrasive filaments also wear the extruder drive gears. If you keep the stock gears, they can wear faster, reduce grip, and increase feeding resistance—often leading to more stress and faster wear on the nozzle and the whole feeding path over time. Upgrading to a hardened (nickel‑plated) gear set helps reduce abrasive wear and keeps feeding more stable.
